case studies

Given the confidential nature of what I do, I have given here an interpretation of some of the reports that I have written.

Case study 1

I was asked to assess the earning capacity of an individual who had not worked for 15 years.  Before they had children, they were a nurse but their membership and training had lapsed.  Given the age of the children I gave numerous examples of the kinds of roles that they could transition into.  The report gave indications of different salaries that could be obtained as their children grew older and more independent.  The report took into account some learning difficulties that one of the children had.

case study 2

This report was commissioned by an individual who wanted me to give a fair and honest assessment of their earning capacity.  They did not speak fluent English and so my report involved extensive research into which roles could be achieved, given both the language barrier and a lack of confidence.  I had to take into account that the individual I was writing about had a child with severe learning difficulties and the strain that this puts upon a family and how it impacts earning capacity.

Case study 3

In this situation, I was asked to assess an individual who was a qualified and experienced pilot.  With so many options open to them including commercial airlines and flight instruction, the report set about listing salaries that could be obtained both part time and full time; both now and when the children were older.  However, the individual wanted to start a new business serving their local community. My role was not to advocate for this idea or the business; it was to provide an earning capacity for the individual given their work experience, qualifications and the local job market conditions.  Whilst the new business had potential, a greater capacity for work could be achieved with flying at that moment in time.

Case study 4

I was asked to write a report about an individual who wanted to move conversations forward in mediation.  Their spouse was curious as to why they could not work full time and my report was designed to set out the facts, as they were at that time.

The subject of the report gave me access to their CV and all their career history; they were doing a well paid role from home with flexibility.  They had 3 children all with diagnosed special educational needs and the responsibility of these children and the running of the house, fell to my client.  After careful examination and a thorough investigation of her daily routine, hour by hour, I concluded that they were already working at maximum earning capacity.
